Brief history about White grass weather station

The White grass weather office is located in Tanna, in the Tafea Province. The site has been relocated from Isagel in July 1958 to Burton field in September 1972, and finally to its current location as of the 1st of January, 1988. It is manned by 2 staff working on a 24/7 shift. Surface observations were done at least  three hours and often hourly, using meteorological instruments and sensory observations. In the future, there will be Automatic Weather Station (AWS) for White grass, through Vanuatu Climate Adaptation Project (VCAP ) funded by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) . Whitegrass weather station have instruments that can measure meteorological parameters such as , atmospheric pressure , wind speed and direction , air temperature and relative humidity . Below is an instrument , which is used to measure a particular meteorological parameter .

Barometer is an instrument which is used to measure air pressure. It gives readings at the station’s altitude to the nearest tenth of a millibar. This reading is then converted to a sea –level equivalent. The reading is then used for forecasting the weather.
